Created in a likeness to a trophy given out by Golf Illustrated as well as a trophy that is at the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame. This cup originated around 1922. Warren Harding a Republican and 29th President of the United States was in office. Vice President Calvin Coolidge took over for Harding in 1923 after his death.
The PGA Champion in 1922 was Gene Sarazen who won at Oakmont Country Club. Sarazen also won the US Open that year at Skokie Country Club. Walter Hagen won the British Open at Royal St. George's Golf Club. This huge cup is in honor of one of the smallest but mightiest golfers ever.
